BEYOND RUGGED RIDES: FORD F-150 RAPTOR VS. TOYOTA TACOMA TRD

At OXX we build premium products for people who work and play outside and getting where you’re going is part of the fun. We build for life’s most extreme situations so, we’re highlighting some of the epic vehicles out there today that also strive to exceed your expectations. Power and performance are what lies inside these OXX certified Beyond Rugged Rides.

The road isn’t big enough for the both of ‘em. In 2017 Ford is rolling out the F-150 Raptor while Toyota tries to take over with the new Tacoma TRD. Both trucks are wicked in their strength and build, but we wanted to ask — which is the more Rugged Ride?

Meet our new favorite bird of prey. The Raptor packs in a 3.5 Liter EcoBoost engine with new a 10-speed transmission. The extra strength-military grade aluminum alloy body makes it equipped for speed. Bolt that onto the off-road ready fully boxed steel frame and it’s ready to take flight. All new Fox Racing Shox and special internal bypass technology allow for 13” suspension travel, and maximum control on nature’s most wild roads. Beadlock Capable Tires on 17 inch wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires paired with Raptor’s Terrain management system add to this predator’s ferocity. Cost: $50,000

This Raptor is savage, even without claws

The Tacoma TRD is built to take on the tough roads. With 16 inch black alloy wheels and Kevlar reinforced Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires, this truck can handle all extremes. With a 2.7 Liter Four-Cylinder engine and 6-speed transmission coming standard, the Toyota falls behind Raptor, but with a 3.5 Liter V-6 engine option, it holds more ground in the clash of the truck titans. An aluminum skid plate, and Rigid Industries LED fog lights are necessary features for any rocky road conditions. Let’s not forget the Fox 2.5 Internal Bypass Shocks that will make the drive more comfortable, even if it’s across the icy Arctic Circle, off roading in Baja Mexico or the Araucanía Region in Chile. Cost: $40,000

So, which ride is more rugged? In the battle between Ford vs. Toyota both are geared up to get you there. As far as speed goes, we are banking on the Ford F-150 Raptor getting there first. With the EcoBoost engine that allows for direct fuel injection and includes twin turbochargers the Toyota can’t compete. Considering the price difference, and all the fancy-shmancy additions to the F-150 it comes down to luxury and preference. We certainly won’t turn our nose up at the awesome power and towing capacity of the Tacoma.

At the end of the day a truck is a truck. Both vehicles strive to do what we do here at OXX, which is build for the worst conditions and hope for the best. Incredible rides are out there, some are just more rugged than others.
